Four Birdville ISD Teachers Earn Most Distinguished Recognition in Country, National Board Certification

After hundreds of hours of reflection, analysis, and refinement of their craft, four Birdville ISD educators have achieved one of the most respected distinctions in teaching – National Board Certification – demonstrating what accomplished teaching looks like at its very best.

In Texas, less than 1,600 educators hold this distinguished certification, making this achievement both rare and significant. Birdville ISD proudly recognizes Susana Meza from Smith Elementary (Middle Childhood Generalist), Sarah Kelly from Smithfield Middle School (English Language Arts, Early Adolescence), Sarah Sherman from North Richland Middle School (English Language Arts, Early Adolescence), and Randi Wheeler-Kurz from North Richland Middle School (English Language Arts, Early Adolescence) for earning certification through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). This rigorous process is widely considered the gold standard in educator certification, requiring teachers to demonstrate deep content knowledge, differentiated instruction, effective classroom practice, and ongoing professional reflection.

“Through hundreds of hours of rigorous work and collaboration, our newly certified candidates demonstrated exceptional commitment, meeting consistently over one to two years to complete one of the most demanding professional certifications in education,” said Sarah Upchurch, Director of Professional Learning. “These four educations have achieved a distinction that reflects the highest standard of teaching excellence.  Their success not only elevates Birdville ISD’s strong reputation across Texas, but also stands as a testament to their resilience, dedication, and unwavering commitment to student learning.”

In Fall 2021, Birdville ISD partnered with Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD, Northwest ISD, Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD, Mansfield ISD, and Carroll ISD to form the Supporting Teacher Excellence: Pathway to National Board Certification Cohort. While each district now independently supports its candidates, BISD’s cohort has built a strong reputation for collaboration and success.

Candidates typically invest 300-400 hours completing four components, including a comprehensive exam, student work analysis, classroom video submissions, and reflective professional learning. Research shows that students taught by National Board Certified Teachers often achieve higher academic outcomes, underscoring the impact of this designation.
